The two-day Event, to be held on Pier 92, will feature four of the industry’s most exciting collections, scheduled to begin on Sunday, January 20, with an evening of premieres. At 6pm, Conference of Birds by renowned stylist, Andrew Holden, will hold its first runway show. Holden’s first collection elegantly combines traditional British tailoring with classic American workwear while offering contemporary silhouettes and extraordinary attention to detail. Between shows, to begin at 7pm, ENK founder Elyse Kroll will celebrate New York Men’s Fashion Week at Blue + Collective with a cocktail reception to be followed at 8pm by Distilled, a collaboration between former Triple5Soul designer, Matty Merrill and former Google tech designer, Sep Kamvar.
On Monday, January 21, at 6pm, Yoko Devereux designer Andy Salzer will send his cult favorite slim-fitting silhouettes down the runway followed by a cocktail reception at 7pm hosted by iconic French label, Le Coq Sportif. Pioneering the break from New York Women’s Fashion Week, Buckler will headline the event with a runway show of Andrew Buckler’s celebrated designs featuring trend-setting denim and tailored suiting synonymous with British rock and roll style.

Following the successful event that premiered in July 2007, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin will take its place on the international fashion calendar again this season with the Fall/Winter 2008 collections January 27 to 31, 2008. Berlin will become a unique fashion destination when the city’s Postbahnhof event location attracts media, buyers, fashion leaders, VIPs and celebrities from around the world.

The show was divided into several scenes, the first of which encompassed a slightly aggressive look comprised of black vinyl and bright yellow swimsuits, some accented with shiny black armbands and hip accents. | Last week Paris became even more fashionable and greener! On its 4th edition, the Ethical Fashion Show brought fashions from 5 continents to celebrate Brazil. The show presented companies that are committed to the ethical and ecologically responsible fashion. Brazilian brands at the show were Moda Fusion, Raiz da Terra Brasil, and the Brazilian-French Envao, Teori, Tudo Bom and Veja. For the 2008 edition, event producers plan to have a special show in Rio. |
Opera Swimwear by Brazilian designer, Sueli Costa, is bringing a very sexy collection for Summer 2008. Having attracted a lot of attention from well-recognized magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Lucky and FHM, this brand stays on the minds and tanned bodies of international trendsetters from all over the world. Sueli Costa, whom already has more than two decades of experience in the fashion industry, gave us an exclusive interview while participating in the SwimShow 2008 in Miami.
N.S.: How was your career development as a designer until you received international acclaim?
S.C.: I started as model when I was a teenager. At the age of 24, when I decided to stop doing the runway, I opened a retail store in Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro. That was the first of five stores that we were able to open during a period of just four years. As soon as I got my major in Fashion and Industrial Design, I decided to have our own manufacturing facilities to supply the market with our exclusive pieces.
N.S.: How about the expansion of your Opera Swimwear brand to new ones providing lingerie and jeans wear?
S.C.: Actually, the Opera brand has started in Italy in 1994, and it was exclusively women’s fine lingerie, very European style. Coming back to Miami, in 1996, I developed the Opera Swimwear and right after that, I opened a store that became famous by a different line of products. The Opera Boutique was a fashion point for models, celebrities, stylists and photographers. This was the starting point for our success in the U.S. The Opera South Beach boutique was opened with the same purpose of when I opened my first store in Rio: to offer design, quality and good taste on exclusive products. Our new brands for jeans and contemporary swimwear Bossa Beach and Opera Jeanswear, are developed with four hands, by myself and Gabriela Pires, my daughter and partner in our business who was born inside the “Fashion world”.
N.S.: How do you explain being so often featured in the most famous magazines in the U.S.? Could it be the mix of the Brazilian sensuality and the sophisticated touch from Sueli Costa?
S.C.: I believe the secret for recognition from international media (and it comes from a formula, that I would never quit using) that it is the combination of elegance, good taste and sensuality with a lot of sophistication.
N.S.: What was your inspiration for the new 2008 swimwear collection?
S.C.: Brazil’s rich colors from Nature, and Brazilian women’s beauty, sensuality and elegance.
Sueli Costa is very confident about the image of her brands in the international market, and in recognition of her talents, the media gives her much deserved attention. Her biggest accomplishment surely is the longevity in such a highly competitive market.

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami Swim Shows 2008 opened with a high note! Coveted Brazilian swimwear brand Rosa Cha, from celebrity designer Amir Slama, kicked the party off! Backstage, in an exclusive interview, he talked about the new 2008 collection and his new challenges as a designer and a fashion enterpreneur.

Slama told us about his passions of history, art and culture and how his new 2008 collection called Movements, was brought to life. The collection was inspired on cultural and artistic movements that fueled the Brazilian Tropicalia in the late sixties. It shows an an ecletic mixture of decadent Dadaism, Surrealism, and Concrete Poetry (sometimes referred to as visual poetry). The original touch of updated retro appeal, makes this collection unique, as a piece of art itself. The informal modeling showed 12 looks, "just a little taste of the 2008 collection" that will be fully presented during New York Fashion Week Summer 2008 in September. According to Slama his biggest challenge is to recreate every six months, "there is no established success, rather a road to be built every day." His brand is working for worldwide recognition and the conquest of Asian market is crucial. His new investments are aimed towards Japan and China, but "slowly and step by step." |
As Slama already has the skills of the master fashion designers that have been in the fashion industry for decades, his passion of serious research to feed his inspiration, has given him the respect of a haute couture swimwear designer and his success should be here to stay for decades also. A Nod to Old Hollywood Glamour for the New Millenium |
Hundreds of Miami VIPs, style-makers and celebrities rocked to the music of Superb Records as models showed off their tanned and toned bodies in playful, colorful looks that were perfect for a day at the beach or a jet-set jaunt in St. Tropez. The looks brought to mind the glamorous Parisian, American and Italian cinema starlets of the 60’s, with a hint of 70’s and 80's and the modern elements of the new Millennium. Graphic bold prints, delicious colors and sexy silhouettes flowed seamlessly together to give the collection a unique feel.
Guests received amazing gift bags overflowing with Smashbox makeup and OPI nail polishes. A veritable who’s who of celebrities, socialites and industry VIP’s, toasted the new line including: socialite and model, Kim Kardashian; Miami “It-Boy”, Ariel Stein; Chutney Ross, daughter of Diana Ross; actor and supermodel Tyson Beckford; Miami’s nightlife queen, Ingrid Casares; rapper, DJ Clue; Los Angeles socialite, Samantha Pressley; Latin pop recording artist, Ana Christina; and stylist and fashion critic, Robert Verdi. Partnership with Cia.Maritima Sets Stage for U.S. Debut of 2008 Collection |
DHL, the world’s leading global express delivery and logistics company, has partnered with Cia.Maritima, Brazil’s largest producer of high-end beachwear, for the U.S. debut of the label’s 2008 collection during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami Swim Shows.
DHL will provide its international delivery and logistics expertise to transport Cia.Maritima’s collection, which designer Benny Rosset debuted during Sao Paulo Fashion Week in June, from Brazil to Miami in time for its U.S. runway show debut on Wednesday, July 11th.
DHL staff will also be on hand throughout the production with DHL “delivery men” removing the runway cover immediately before the start of show.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami Swim Shows announced an exciting addition to the already exceptional lineup of designers for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami Swim today. The news came Friday, when the show’s producer, global sports, entertainment and media giant IMG signed the Milan-based swimwear brand MISS BIKINI to be the sixteenth and final addition for this year’s show.
“We are proud to welcome MISS BIKINI to our roster of truly talented designers this year,” said svp of IMG Fashion, Fern Mallis. “Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami Swim has become a strong platform to showcase the finest swimwear talent and designers, one which we are delighted that MISS BIKINI has chosen for its first US runway appearance. We believe that this addition represents the quality and ingenuity that people have grown to look for in this show.”

 | Last week in New York, fashionable dogs were on the catwalk (or dogwalk?) wearing the latest designs at the Pet Fashion Week 2007. New York’s Metropolitan Pavilion played host to the ultimate celebration of the human-canine bond: Pet Fashion Week NY 07. |
As the world’s most progressive design platform, Pet Fashion Week NY 07 featured the following:
- The PFW Fashion Kick-off Party sponsored by Legally Blonde – The Musical started off the weekend mixing fashion with fundraising to benefit the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals. Over 300 guests danced the night away, most of them dressed in pink. Elle Woods, the main cast member of the Musical, attended with Bruiser and hosted part of night.
- The PFW runway shows featured the demi-couture lines of 13 international pet apparel and accessory designers. Under the direction of famed human apparel designer Jonathan Peters, the show presented was nothing short of spectacular and treated the audience to one couture piece from each designer.
- The Pet Fashion Week NY Media Choice Award sponsored by Crystallized™ - using Swarovski Elements. Designers were asked to create designs within five different trend visions. The winner, chosen by media, was Manfred of Sweden.
- The PFW Lifestyle Innovation Award sponsored by Legally Blonde – The Musical featured six pet bedding designers that competed for a promotional award. The winner of the award, the Turkish design company Gino the Dog by Gaia and Gino, was announced on Sunday, August 19th.
- The Isle of Dogs Creative Styling Showcase and live art exhibit was the must-see event of the show, featuring Sathit Suratphiphit of Thailand’s famed Starwood Arts of Grooming School and David Klasfeld of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. The artists presented five avant-garde dog/human styling concepts.
Pet Fashion Week NY founders Mario DiFante and Alexa Cach hosted the exciting event that attracted over 2500 buyers eager to see the latest pet industry trends that were presented by 150+ exhibitors.
