Retrospective 2007: Sustainable Fashion is Here to Stay!
The year of 2007 confirmed Sustainable Fashion not as a trend, but as our future! New brands keep coming and are eager to advocate more participation and consciousness and in opposition to the stereotypical superficial and alienating type of fashions. Besides that, traditional names are now giving their contributions in efforts toward social and ecologically responsible business practices.
Several fashion shows turned to this theme and encouraged famous designers to try new materials. The Sao Paulo Fashion Week used water as their theme, the Los Angeles Fashion Week brought to the runway the power of green, and in Paris, the Ethical Fashion Show presented sustainable fashions from five continents.
The importance of sustainable fashion is directly related to a strong commitment in facing serious problems such as global warming. Although that is a problem on a worldwide level, our small daily actions and choices can make an impact on the whole picture. Therefore, as fashionistas and consumers, we have the responsibility in our own hands to make wise choices and business owners have the responsibility to adopt business practices and to offer products that are good for the environment and for people.
The solutions already in place go from using recycled materials (like sequins made of plastic bottles), organic materials (like organic cotton), natural dyes and softeners (extracted from plants), to real innovative 100% eco-friendly fabrics (like Ecovogt).
To help you on your next fashion shopping excursion and to support the preservation of our planet for future generations, I have compiled a non-exhaustive list of fashion brands that are already strong players in the industry in favor of those changes: Alabama Chanin (US), Avita (US), Bibe (Brasil), Caio Von Vogt (Brasil), Ecoganik (US), EDUN (US-Africa), Goóc (Brasil), Levi’s Eco (US), Linda Loudermilk (US), Moda Fusion (Brasil), Osklen (Brasil), Pelli Cha (US).
Happy Eco-Chic 2008!
